Screen Printing

Screen Printing In-Person

Screen printing is a process for transfering graphic art onto fabric. It's best known for printing clothes, and can also print on paper, or any porous flat surface! It's a mix of digital and handskills, with the ability to quickly print many items.

** Note, we are testing out a NEW version of the training where you will hand-cut paper stencils for your design**

This class is an introduction to screenprinting with both paper stencils and (pre-made) machine-cut and applied vinyl stencils in Metropolis. We will go from a simple design in vinyl and a custom paper stencil, to ink on paper or cloth.

Preparation for class:

    • bring an idea for a simple stencil design to be cut out of paper, you can draw this ahead of time
      • one color on a background, no gradients or shades
      • bold, chunky designs are easiest
      • NO floating pieces, think like a stencil designer
      • any typical image format, jpg, png, etc
      • if desired, you can size your design to fit a specifc item (tshirt, tote bag) that you want to print on
    • wear unprecious clothes, we're working with ink
    • optionally, bring an unprecious garment or tote bag to print on
      • light colored fabric can take most ink colors
      • dark or black fabric will require a bit more effort to get colors to stand out (white ink is easiest but can be finicky)
